The EXACT same thing happened to me.
Back when I was using the unofficial version, I also had Kaspersky anti-virus on my PC for some time. For some reason the anti-virus didn't trust/like Map.LMU files and didn't allow them to be modified. The issue only went away when I disabled my anti-virus. So unless it was some weird coincidence, I believe that could be causing it.
You may have a totally different anti-virus program to me, but try to work on your game when it's suitable to have it disabled completely - or see if there's a different one you can install. Worth a go and it fixed my issue.

Wow, thank you so much for such an overwhelmingly positive review! Perhaps I am too harsh on myself, but I feel 5 stars is beyond what I would ever have considered for this game. I'm very grateful though, and I'm glad you liked it. It's bittersweet to have such a nice review because I really don't have it in me to pick up this game again.
Although I had to cancel this demo, it created a foundation for my future game and in a lot of ways Villnoire is a spiritual successor (reusing and refining ideas from White Magic) so, in a sense the project isn't completely dead.
Working on this demo gave me a glimpse of the heights I could reach if I applied myself, and I haven't stopped climbing since. Thank you for this inspiring review. You're the best!

Open World in Review
We've all had our low points with making our games, but that sounds horrible. Take your time, and don't force creativity. If RPG Maker feels like work - then don't do it. There's no rule on how long your break should be.
RPG Maker 2003 is a stubborn engine, it just won't die. So I wouldn't worry about that, I still play and love games made with it.

I really liked reading this. It's nice to get an insight into someone with questions you can't ask naturally. Sure, you've got the forum to talk to each other - but you never really get to hear people's background/inspirations/future goals in this way.

Thanks. If you can hold off downloading the demo for a few more days, I have a huge update coming up. It's three times as long, with some pretty significant improvements and new features along the way!

This game is actually bonkers. I know plenty about RM2K3, and how it works, but even I can't quite fathom the amount of meticulous detail this game has.
Of course, I plan to give detailed thoughts, but I literally don't know what to say about it at the moment.
